Noctiluca

The light was going fast.
We hardly knew each other.
We walked round the harbor’s edge,
Feeling our way in the gloaming,
Down a path to a neighbor’s beach.
We sat on sea-smoothed ledge,
With the tide as high as it gets,
While little surges worked their way
Around our fingertips.
Not all mysteries are in the depths,
Some float up to the surface.
That night the light was fiery green
When we first felt our hearts glow.
